Kylian Mbappe misses an open goal from six yards against Australia but then finally gets bid for World Cup Golden Boot on track

Kylian Mbappe is a player who could take this World Cup by the scruff of the neck, but even he’s capable of missing an absolute sitter.

The Paris Saint-Germain star started for France in their World Cup clash against Australia and ensured the Socceroos had plenty to think about with a goal.

However, he won’t want to see his missed chance at the end of the first half again.

With France 2-1 up, Mbappe was passed the ball by Antoine Griezmann and had the seemingly simply task of tapping into an empty net.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old got it all wrong as he blazed his effort high over the bar before showing an embarrassed smile as he put his head in his hands.

That said, Mbappe’s threat was clear for all to see by using his electric pace down the left flank, he was a constant source of anxiety for Australia as they tried desperate to keep pace with him.

He did eventually get his goal after scoring four in 2018.

“The Australian back line, who have been pretty genuine in their endeavours, couldn’t deal with the tempo from France,” Stuart Pearce, who was watching for talkSPORT said.

Mbappe will be happy, but at least the miss shows he is human after all.
