Mateo Kovacic, the Chelsea star, has stated that the players must take some responsibility for the sacking of Graham Potter. The Blues dismissed the 47-year-old last week, less than seven months after he took charge at Stamford Bridge. Kovacic has said that the squad needs to do better and take some of the blame for another boss departing, after Thomas Tuchel was sacked earlier in the campaign. Chelsea have spent over £600m on new players this season but are yet to reach the expected heights. Kovacic even praised Potter for doing a good job, despite leaving Chelsea in 11th place in the Premier League table.
Frank Lampard, former Chelsea manager and club legend, has returned to west London to take over as caretaker until the end of the season. While Kovacic is happy to be reunited with Lampard, he has called on the squad to take responsibility for their performances. In an interview with Sky Sports, Kovacic said that it is easier to sack a coach than 30 players, but it is on them as well to do better. Kovacic has issued a rallying cry to his Chelsea teammates to get behind Lampard ahead of their clash away at Wolves on Saturday.
Kovacic has said that Lampard explained to them what he wants and what his desire is for the end of the season. He added that they have two beautiful games with Real Madrid, so there is a possibility to finish the season well. Lampard came back very calm with a clear idea of what he expects from them, but it is still only one day, so they will see in the next few days what he will ask them to do on the pitch and how they will prepare. Kovacic concluded by saying that Lampard is back, and they want to do the best for the club.
