Ibrahima Konate in Talks for New Liverpool Contract
Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is reportedly in discussions with the club to sign a new contract. The Frenchman, who joined the Reds from RB Leipzig in 2021, has become an integral part of Jurgen Klopp’s squad.
Impressive Performances and Potential
Despite being limited by injuries to 68 appearances in his two-and-a-half seasons at Liverpool, Konate has showcased his world-class potential, especially when playing alongside Virgil van Dijk. His performances have caught the attention of the club, and they are keen to secure his services beyond his current contract, which expires in 2026.
Talks Underway
According to French outlet Le10Sport, talks have now begun between Liverpool’s hierarchy and Konate’s representatives. While there is no urgency due to the remaining two-and-a-half years on his existing deal, Liverpool wants to reach an agreement by the end of the 2023/2024 season. This move aims to reward Konate’s development and fend off potential interest from other clubs.
Konate’s Commitment to Liverpool
Despite rumors linking him to Paris Saint-Germain, Konate has expressed his commitment to Liverpool. In an interview with Canal+ in November, he stated that while playing for his hometown club would be tempting, he is not currently considering it as a goal. It is clear that Konate sees his future with Liverpool for the long term.
Other Contract Extensions
Konate is not the only player in talks for a contract extension at Liverpool. Manager Jurgen Klopp has expressed his desire to retain Joel Matip beyond the summer when his current deal expires. Additionally, Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson, and Caoimhin Kelleher all have contracts expiring in the coming years.
It is expected that Thiago will leave on a free transfer this summer, while Adrian’s contract is also set to expire.
