Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Hopes to Avoid FA Cup Replay Against Arsenal
Liverpool’s upcoming FA Cup tie against Arsenal could potentially result in a replay, but Jurgen Klopp has expressed his desire to avoid that scenario. The match, scheduled for Sunday, will determine which team advances to the fourth round of the competition. However, Klopp is keen to prevent a replay due to Liverpool’s extensive list of injured players and the fact that it would take place during the club’s winter break.
During a pre-match press conference, Klopp emphasized the importance of maintaining a proper rhythm for his team. He stated that a rematch against Arsenal would not be helpful and would disrupt their winter break. Liverpool’s winter break begins after the League Cup semi-final first leg against Fulham on January 10 and lasts until their match against Bournemouth on January 21.
Klopp has previous experience with this situation, as seen in the 2020 FA Cup tie against Shrewsbury. On that occasion, he decided not to take charge of the replay and fielded Liverpool’s youngest-ever starting lineup, led by academy coach Neil Critchley. Despite criticism for disrespecting the competition, Klopp stood by his principles and promises made to his team and the Premier League.
While Klopp is determined to avoid a replay, he is equally eager to secure victory within the regulation 90 minutes at the Emirates. He emphasized that Liverpool cannot think about exiting the FA Cup early and must focus on each match as it comes.
By prioritizing rest during the winter break and aiming for a decisive victory against Arsenal, Klopp hopes to navigate this crucial phase of the season successfully.
