Diogo Jota’s Return Provides Optimism for Liverpool’s Match Against Newcastle
After being sidelined with a hamstring injury for over a month, Diogo Jota’s return to the matchday squad against Burnley has given Jurgen Klopp plenty of optimism for his potential role in Liverpool’s upcoming match against Newcastle on New Year’s Day.
A Belated Christmas Present
Jota’s return was expected to be delayed until 2024, but his surprise inclusion on the bench for the Reds’ Boxing Day clash indicates that he is nearing full fitness. Klopp is eager for Jota to get some game time before potentially playing a bigger role against Newcastle.
Klopp’s Explanation for Including Jota
Explaining his decision to include Jota in the squad for the Burnley match, Klopp stated, “Diogo Jota is back, which is good. Smelling the stadium atmosphere again and then, hopefully, he is ready for Newcastle.”
Klopp also mentioned that the busy schedule of four games in 10 days necessitated changes to the lineup. With Jota’s return, Klopp now has the option to make five substitutions without significantly lowering the team’s average age.
A Timely Return
Jota had been in incredible form before his injury, scoring a goal in each of the games leading up to the match against Man City. Klopp acknowledged that Jota’s return is very timely for the team, especially with injuries continuing to mount and Mohamed Salah set to depart for AFCON after the Newcastle match.
While Jota will need some time to readjust and regain match fitness, his ability to score timely goals will be crucial for Liverpool, especially with the busy schedule of games ahead.
