Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp Credits Pep Lijnders for Fourth Goal in Victory over Newcastle
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has revealed that assistant coach Pep Lijnders played a crucial role in the team’s victory over Newcastle, particularly in the build-up to their fourth goal. After beating Newcastle 4-2, Klopp spoke about Lijnders’ advice during an interview with LFC TV.
Klopp was in high spirits after finding his wedding ring and securing a win against Newcastle, which put Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League.
During the interview, Klopp explained how Lijnders had urged him to make a substitution that ultimately led to Mohamed Salah’s penalty in the second half. Lijnders approached Klopp and said, “Boss, we need to bring Macca on. Wataru’s on yellow and we need Macca’s passes.” Klopp made the substitution in the 75th minute, bringing on Alexis Mac Allister.
Mac Allister wasted no time in making an impact, providing a brilliant pass for Diogo Jota, who won a penalty just 10 minutes later. Klopp expressed his delight at the outcome, stating, “Not bad, eh? Really good, I’m so happy, and then Diogo was gone and Mo this time used it. What a night!”
While Klopp may have made the substitution at some point, Lijnders’ urgency and insight played a significant role in Liverpool’s success. Lijnders has taken on additional responsibilities within the team, including leading press conferences for League Cup fixtures and acting as the lead coach in Klopp’s absence.
Klopp’s ability to make impactful substitutions has been a notable improvement since his arrival at Liverpool. However, he downplayed his influence after the match, emphasizing the importance of having quality options on the bench.
In recent games, homegrown talents like Harvey Elliott and Joe Gomez have excelled when coming off the bench, showcasing Klopp’s coaching abilities.
Overall, Klopp’s collaboration with Lijnders and the team’s depth in talent have contributed to Liverpool’s success this season. With their victory over Newcastle, Liverpool remains at the top of the Premier League table.
