Jurgen Klopp Condemns Chants Referencing Hillsborough Disaster at Luton Game
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expressed his disappointment towards fans who directed chants at Liverpool supporters, indirectly referencing the Hillsborough disaster, during the team’s game against Luton. The taunts occurred during the second half of the Premier League draw at Kenilworth Road.
Strong Condemnation from Jamie Carragher
Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher also condemned the chants, stating that “we’re better than that.” Carragher has been vocal about his opposition to tragedy chanting between rival supporters. In July, the Football Association introduced new rules to address this issue, following the arrest of a Manchester United supporter who wore a shirt mocking the victims of Hillsborough during last season’s FA Cup final.
Klopp Calls Out the Chants
Although Klopp did not hear the chants during the Luton match, he expressed his disappointment and said, “Shame on everyone who said it.” Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher emphasized the need for rivalry among supporters but urged them to rise above tragedy chanting, stating that “we’re better than that.”
Liverpool secured a dramatic point in added time when substitute Luis Diaz scored to equalize Luton’s 80th-minute goal by Tahith Chong.
