Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes took a hit as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester United at Old Trafford. Despite dominating the game with 28 shots and creating seven big chances, the Reds once again suffered from poor finishing. The profligacy in front of goal has become a recurring theme for Liverpool, and if it continues, their title push may not end in success.
One player who had a forgettable day was Darwin Nunez. Despite his improved performance this season, the striker still has a long way to go before becoming the unstoppable force that Liverpool had hoped for when they signed him for £85 million. Nunez completed just six of his 12 passes, missed a big chance, and was substituted when Liverpool desperately needed a goal.
The absence of Ibrahima Konate from the starting lineup raised questions about Jurgen Klopp’s decision-making. Jarell Quansah was chosen ahead of Konate, but it is worth considering whether the outcome would have been different if the Frenchman had started. Although Quansah did not play poorly, Liverpool may have benefited from Konate’s presence, especially his pace to prevent United from counter-attacking.
One bright spot for Liverpool was Harvey Elliott. The 21-year-old made an impact when he came on as a substitute, winning the penalty that led to the equalizer and influencing the flow of the game. Elliott displayed intelligence in possession and rarely gave the ball away cheaply. If Liverpool had shown such composure from the start, they could have easily won the match.
Liverpool’s struggles in midfield were evident once again. They failed to control the center of the park, winning only eight out of 24 ground duels. Alexis Mac Allister was the standout performer in midfield, winning five of his ten attempted duels. Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai lost more duels than they won, allowing United to gain a foothold in the game.
Ultimately, Liverpool’s lack of control in midfield proved to be their downfall once again. Despite their dominance in shots and chances created, they were unable to secure a victory against United. The draw at Old Trafford may have dented Liverpool’s title hopes, but there are still games left in the season for them to bounce back.
