Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell has questioned Gareth Southgate’s decision to leave Ben White out of the latest England squad.

Southgate has picked a 28-man team for upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and Germany.

It is the final time the Three Lions boss will get to see his side playing before the World Cup starts in November.

Arsenal have two players in the squad – Aaron Ramsdale and Bukayo Saka – but a notable absentee is defender White.

The 24-year-old has enjoyed a good start to the season for the Gunners, who occupy top spot in the Premier League.

White has been tasked with playing in the unfamiliar position of right-back and has still performed well.

Criticism has been levied at Southgate for including the likes of Harry Maguire despite the Manchester United captain not playing regularly for his club recently.

Campbell can’t understand why players have been included in the squad based on displays in past tournaments for England.

‘I think he has [shown enough to be in the England squad,’ Campbell told talkSPORT of White.

‘He’s played out of position for Arsenal this season and he’s been outstanding at right-back. You know what he can do at centre-back and right-back now.

‘When you’re top of the league and you’re doing well and you don’t get in the England squad, then you’re going to question.

‘There’s players there who aren’t playing for their clubs, who have got in because they’ve had tournament football under the manager.

‘But if they’re not playing for their club and you know what they can do, why are you picking them?

‘Why not give the opportunity to somebody who you can have a look at, give them some game time.’
