Caoimhin Kelleher Aims to Become Liverpool’s No. 1 Goalkeeper
Ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming Europa League clash against Toulouse, Caoimhin Kelleher expressed his determination to become the team’s first-choice goalkeeper. Despite playing second fiddle to Alisson for over two years, Kelleher remains focused on his ambition.
Striving for the Top Spot
Kelleher, a talented Irishman, stated, “Clearly, obviously, I’m still backup at the moment but my ambition is to play as many games as I can. At the moment, I’m backup and my ambition is obviously to be a No. 1. I’m just trying to do as well as I can and make the most of my opportunities.”
Kelleher emphasized the importance of the Europa League in terms of gaining match sharpness and furthering his development. He believes that getting a good run of games is crucial for his progress towards becoming a No. 1 goalkeeper.
Future Prospects
With Alisson still in his prime at 31 years old, there have been suggestions that Kelleher may need to leave Liverpool to fulfill his potential. However, the 24-year-old chose to stay at the club last summer and now has the opportunity to showcase his talents in the Europa League.
In addition to his European appearances, Kelleher has started both of Liverpool’s League Cup games and aims to continue winning in the competition to reach Wembley. He has already demonstrated his ability in penalty shootouts, scoring a spot-kick against Chelsea in the 2022 final and becoming the Liverpool goalkeeper with the most saved penalties in the club’s history.
