Pep Guardiola, Manchester City boss, has said that Kalvin Phillips has to “convince” himself and his team-mates that he has a future at the club. Phillips has made only eight substitute Premier League appearances since joining from Leeds United last summer, and had shoulder surgery in September, which limited his availability earlier in the season. Guardiola said that players have to earn his confidence, and that no decisions will be taken now. He added that teams change a lot and players who were important in previous seasons may not be as important this season.
City face Phillips’ former club Leeds on Saturday for the chance to stretch their lead at the top of the Premier League table to four points. Guardiola also said that the high calibre of games has counted against Phillips, as he hasn’t had much playing time to get into the rhythm. He said that John Stones and Rodri have been with him for seven and four years respectively, and he doesn’t have to tell them much. He added that Kalvin’s lack of minutes makes it more difficult for him to get into the rhythm.
Guardiola said that they will see at the end of the season if the players are happy with the situation or not, but right now he is not going to discuss anything.
