Kai Havertz on Arsenal Role: “Hopefully It Works”

Date:

Kai Havertz Enjoying New Position at Arsenal and Believes He Can Score Many Goals

Kai Havertz says he is ‘really enjoying’ playing in a new position at Arsenal and believes he can score many goals under Mikel Arteta. The German international made the shock switch from Chelsea to Arsenal this summer in a deal worth £65million. Having mostly struggled during his three years at Stamford Bridge, it was a surprise to many that Arteta wanted to sign the 24-year-old and more so that he would be willing to pay a huge sum in order to get him.

Fans and pundits are intrigued to see what role Havertz will play at the Emirates having been used mainly as a makeshift No.9 for the Blues, though based on pre-season it appears Arteta has something very different in mind. He has played as the left-sided No.8 in a three-man midfield, effectively replacing Granit Xhaka, with captain Martin Odegaard and record-signing Declan Rice alongside him.

Havertz Adapting to New Role at Arsenal

So far, it’s a system that mostly works with goals in the wins against the MLS All-Stars and Barcelona, though he did struggle in his first start for the Gunners in the loss to Manchester United. Havertz knows there is plenty of room for improvement, but so far is loving life at his new club, telling ESPN: ‘I really enjoy it, to play that position. I am more on the ball, more integrated in the game. I am really enjoying it. I think I have a lot of room to improve in the games, I am still adapting to the game and everything. So far it is working quite well.

‘I think [goals are] important for my position, and also with my height. I want to score goals. It’s part of my game. I always have to arrive there. Hopefully it works more times in the league now.’

“The team is amazing and it definitely feels like home already. They have made it very easy for me to integrate with the team. It is fun to be with them, they are all so young and hungry. This is exactly what I wanted and I am very happy to be here.”

Arsenal Preseason Results

Arsenal have one more pre-season friendly to go – against Monaco at the Emirates on Wednesday – before their campaign gets underway next Sunday with the Community Shield against Manchester City. Havertz can then make his Premier League debut for the Gunners on 12th August against Nottingham Forest.
