Juventus legend Andrea Pirlo has reportedly set his sights on becoming the next Belgium manager.

The Belgium post has recently arrived on the job market following the departure of Roberto Martinez after a dismal World Cup in Qatar last month, with the former Everton and Wigan boss since being appointed the new Portugal manager.

According to Dutch outlet HLN, Pirlo has thrown his name into the hat and has high hopes to replace the Spaniard in the Belgian dugout.

But he might be facing a tough battle up against Arsenal icon Thierry Henry, who worked as Martinez’s No. 2 with the Red Devils and has been tipped as one of the favourites to replace him.

Belgium also want to appoint a manager by February and have set out their criteria which includes being a serial winner, international experience and a tactical expert.

That could rule out both coaches, with neither so far exhibiting a successful career as managers so far.

Pirlo was sacked after just one season as Juventus boss following a disastrous campaign where the Old Lady finished fourth in Serie A – ending nine consecutive years of winning the Scudetto.

Henry’s coaching career has arguably been worse, with his short stint in charge at Monaco coming to an end in January 2019 after managing just four wins out of 20 games in charge.

However, the report goes on to state that key players such as Romelu Lukaku and Toby Alderweireld have backed the Premier League great to take the reins.

Meanwhile, Martinez has already found new work after landing the Portugal job following the departure of Fernando Santos.

The Selecao had a disappointing World Cup after crashing out to Morocco in the quarter-finals while there was discontent among the ranks, particularly from Cristiano Ronaldo who reacted angrily to being subbed off against South Korea and was subsequently dropped from the next two matches.

However, Martinez hardly impressed in Qatar, either, as Belgium were knocked out at the group stage in one of the shocks of the tournament.

Portugal’s eventual conquerors, Morocco, topped the group while Croatia landed the runners-up place as Belgium and Canada were sent home early.

Upon confirmation of his role at Portugal, Martinez said:  “I am very excited to be here. I am very happy to represent one of the national teams with the best talent in the world.”
