Juventus have announced their intention to leave the European Super League project, breaking ranks with Real Madrid and Barcelona who have stuck to the general principles of the plan. Juventus have written to the two clubs to demand talks which will focus on their potential exit from the project. Following the talks and their assessment of them, Juventus will continue with further communications “due under the law”. This comes after a turbulent few months for Juventus, who were initially docked 15 points by the Italian FA for financial rule breaches. This punishment was overturned but a second hearing led to a 10-point penalty, which the club accepted. On Sunday, Paulo Dybala’s last-minute goal for Roma sealed a Europa League place at Juventus’ expense, and they finished seventh, entering the Europa Conference League instead of the Champions League. It is believed that Juventus are hoping for a favourable ruling from the European Courts of Justice around Uefa’s monopoly over their position as a competition organiser and their ability to exclude clubs who set up rival competitions.
