Jurrien Timber hit out at his Ajax teammates following their 3-0 defeat to PSV on Sunday. A double from Luuk de Jong and Xavi Simons’ penalty sealed a deserved win for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side at the Philips Stadion. The win has put PSV three points clear of third-placed Ajax in the Eredivisie but they remain eight points behind league leaders Feyenoord with four games left to play.

Timber, who is wanted by Manchester United and Liverpool ahead of the summer transfer window, included himself in his criticism of Ajax’s senior players and described the defeat to PSV as ‘painful’. ‘I think we just weren’t ready today,’ Timber told ESPN. ‘Very annoying. Painful, annoying, you put it well. You can talk a lot, but in the end you have to show it on the pitch. We didn’t do that.

‘It’s frustrating when you don’t get into the game, balls don’t go in and you concede goals too easily. I think everyone takes a good look at themselves. You try to cheer each other up, but that is sometimes frustrating, yes. You try to address boys and keep their spirits up. They started sharper than us and then you walk backwards. Then it becomes difficult. We have to look back carefully and respond next week.

‘As I said, I think everyone needs to look at themselves. [Jorrel] Hato certainly played a good game, especially for his age. I think that’s great. But the leaders of the team have to look at themselves. We have to stay together as a team. Next week is the cup final. It’s not over yet.’
