Jurgen Klopp was not entertaining any possible headlines as he gave a response to the club’s decision to play the national anthem at Anfield on Saturday. With the coronation of King Charles III set to take place in London on the same day, the Premier League urged all matches this weekend to play the anthem prior to kick-off. Liverpool have confirmed they will comply, but Klopp made it clear that the club’s position was his own. “I’m from Germany, we don’t have a king or queen, I’m 55 and have no real experience with that,” he said. “Watching from the outside it’s a nice thing to watch, all the weddings are massive in Germany but no one really feels that. That’s it. I’m pretty sure a lot of people in this country will enjoy the coronation, some may not be interested and some will not like it. That’s over the whole country.”
The club has stated that it is “a personal choice how those at Anfield on Saturday mark this occasion and we know some supporters have strong views on it.” Liverpool supporters are known for their passion and commitment to their beliefs, so it is likely that boos and chants of disapproval will be heard when the anthem plays. Unfortunately, some publications may not understand why and may attempt to condemn the fans, but this would be an uneducated response and would show a lack of effort to understand the situation.
