Jurgen Klopp defends Liverpool signing Wataru Endo after missing out on top targets

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has defended the club’s surprise signing of Wataru Endo from Stuttgart, after missing out on their top defensive midfield targets.

On Friday, Liverpool confirmed the signing of Endo, with the Japan captain penning a four-year deal. The move for the 30-year-old seemingly came completely out of nowhere and very shortly after the Reds had missed out on top targets Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia.

The young stars snubbed the chance to move to Anfield, instead joining rivals Chelsea for a combined fee of £173milllion. Liverpool had also been hoping to sign Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham but were priced out of a move for both, with the England stars moving to Arsenal and Real Madrid instead.

Why did Liverpool sign Wataru Endo?

As such, Endo appears to be a very underwhelming signing for the club, at least compared to who they were linked with, and as such some fans are not too happy with business being done. But Klopp insists his new No.3 is extremely talented and a perfect fit for his team.

Klopp told LFCTV: ‘I’m really happy. Wataru is a really good player. I know in this world of football how it goes and stuff like this, but have a look, have a look, because he’s a really good player. Experienced player, captain of Stuttgart, captain of Japan, speaks good English, nice fella, family man, machine on the pitch, good footballer on top of that, sensational attitude. So, I’m really happy. He’s a good footballer, very experienced and loves to work extremely hard.’

Klopp was desperate to sign a defensive midfielder and a player with leadership skills following the departures of Fabinho, Jordan Henderson and James Milner this summer.

What do Liverpool fans think about Wataru Endo?

Liverpool fans are not too happy with the signing of Endo, as they had been hoping for a marquee signing in midfield. But Klopp insists that Endo is a great signing for the club and will prove to be an important player for them in the future.

Klopp is confident that Endo will be able to fill the void left by Fabinho, Henderson and Milner and provide the team with some much needed leadership in midfield. He is also confident that Endo will be able to adjust quickly to life in the Premier League and become an important player for Liverpool.

Conclusion

Liverpool’s signing of Wataru Endo has come as a surprise to many fans, but Jurgen Klopp is confident that he is the right man for the job. Endo is an experienced player with leadership qualities and Klopp believes he will be able to fill the void left by Fabinho, Henderson and Milner. Only time will tell if Endo can make an impact at Anfield but Klopp is confident that he is the right man for the job.
