Jurgen Klopp rules out leaving Liverpool to manage German national team

Jurgen Klopp has ruled out leaving Liverpool before his contract is up to manage the German national team. Despite being linked with the job for years, the 56-year-old has reiterated his determination to see out his contract at Anfield that runs until 2026.

Germany’s Struggles

Over the years, Klopp has been consistently linked with managing his country and rumours have only increased in recent times due to Germany’s poor performances. Die Mannschaft have been knocked out of the last two World Cups at the group stage in humiliating fashion and suffered an early exit at the hands of bitter rivals England at the Euros two years ago.

They are set to host Euro 2024 but head coach Hansi Flick is under intense pressure and scrutiny having won just four of his last 16 games.

Klopp’s Loyalty to Liverpool

But Klopp says he will not be replacing the former Bayern Munich boss and has reiterated his determination to see out his contract at Anfield that runs until 2026.

‘The job of national coach is and would be a great honour — there’s no question about that,’ the 56-year-old said. ‘The problem that stands in the way of the whole thing is my loyalty. I can’t just leave Liverpool now and say I’ll take over Germany for a short time. That doesn’t work and the request isn’t even there.

‘If I’m supposed to do that [manage Germany] at some point, then I have to be available and I’m not currently. I have a responsibility towards the club. Basically, it’s an interesting job. But I don’t know yet whether I’ll do something completely different after I leave Liverpool. I want to keep my options open.’

Klopp’s Success at Liverpool

If Klopp sees out his contract with Liverpool as planned, he will have managed the Reds for just shy of 11 years, with 433 games under his belt already. So far, the German has won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup and Club World Cup.

Liverpool and Klopp are currently in Germany for the first part of their pre-season tour, and are set to take on Greuther Furth on Monday.
