Jurgen Klopp has warned his team not to underestimate the threat posed by Tottenham this weekend, despite admitting he thought their capitulation at Newcastle last weekend was a “joke”. Klopp tuned in to watch Tottenham and saw them concede in the second minute, but when he returned to the screen later, he couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Despite the 6-1 defeat which cost interim head coach Cristian Stellini his job after just four matches, Klopp is still wary of Tottenham’s quality, citing Harry Kane, Son, Kulusevski, Perisic, Richarlison, Hojbjerg and more as examples of their exceptional talent. He also warned that if given the opportunity, they could score from almost anywhere.
Klopp has taken issue this season with what he believes are media misconceptions about his team and their problems, but he also knows the echo chamber of social media has amplified issues. He urged his team to make decisions based on their own judgement and not be swayed by what people write on social media. He understands that this season has made people nervous, but urged them not to make panic decisions. He said that even though some players may not have been performing as well as expected, it doesn’t mean they will never be able to play football again.
