Liverpool’s 4-4 draw at Southampton provided plenty of talking points, with fans also looking ahead to a busy summer transfer window. An afternoon that started at a relaxed pace turned into a crazy game at St Mary’s. With the sun beating down, Liverpool scored twice before surrendering four goals in succession, only to produce a comeback of their own in the latter stages. Here, Sam Millne (@sam_millne), Tom Eves (@TomEvesJourno) and Joanna Durkan (@JoannaDurkan_) discuss Liverpool’s rollercoaster ride against Southampton and look ahead to what is to come this summer.
The trio discussed their relief that the season was finally over, with Jurgen Klopp having said that “there were moments during the season when you thought ‘the season will be four years long'”. They agreed that the campaign had been exhausting and that there had been little to celebrate throughout. They also discussed what could be learnt from the match, with Joanna noting that they had to learn to stop conceding four goals to an already-relegated side.
The discussion then moved on to Caoimhin Kelleher’s performance in goal, with Sam noting that it was difficult for a backup goalkeeper to come in out of the cold. Tom added that Kelleher had struggled and Joanna highlighted how important Alisson had been for the team this season.
The trio then discussed who had stood out on Sunday, with Sam noting Diogo Jota’s ability to score from nothing and Tom praising Trent Alexander-Arnold’s influence. Joanna added that Jota had closed out the season on a positive note and highlighted how important the summer would be for competition on the left.
Finally, they discussed who would be their dream signing, with Joanna opting for Moises Caicedo and Tom choosing Nicolo Barella. Sam suggested Alexis Mac Allister as a good option for Liverpool, noting his motivation to play under Klopp and his versatility. The trio agreed that more than one signing was needed for Liverpool to have a successful transfer window.
