Jose Enrique disagrees with Gary Neville over future of Manchester United star David de Gea

Former Newcastle and Liverpool defender Jose Enrique believes that ‘David de Gea still has a lot to give Manchester United’ in spite of recent comments made about the goalkeeper.

De Gea has started all nine of United’s matches so far this season and is currently the undisputed No.1 keeper ahead of Martin Dubravka and Tom Heaton.

The Spanish shot-stopper has been at Old Trafford for 11 years now but his time in Manchester could be coming to an end with his contract set to expire next summer.

Erik ten Hag is looking to implement a more possession-based brand of football at the club, and some believe that De Gea should be replaced with a keeper who is more comfortable with playing out from the back.

It is a view shared by United legend Gary Neville, who said: ‘The goalkeeper needs to be brilliant on the ball and I suspect that with David de Gea, his career at Manchester United is probably going to be short-lived under Erik ten Hag.

‘Because he’s going to be absolutely adamant that his philosophy of playing out from the back, playing through midfield, playing those little risky passes that we see City and Ederson do all the time – that we no longer see as risky because they do it so well – is something that I think he’s striving for and wants to get to.’

In recent years many of United’s rivals have spent big to acquire new keepers who are just as good with their feet as they are with their hands, as evidenced by Manchester City and Ederson, Liverpool and Alisson, and Arsenal and Aaron Ramsdale.

De Gea’s ability on the ball has come under a lot of scrutiny, especially after the 4-0 defeat at Brentford in August where he was directly at fault for the opening two goals.

But Enrique still thinks the 31-year-old can deliver the goods, telling Lord Ping: ‘People forget how good De Gea has been in the last few seasons.

‘If the team is clicking, he can be a great player. He’s a very good shot-stopper and can still win United a lot of points.

‘Gary Neville watches Man United a lot more than I do, but I think he’s a very good goalkeeper and they should be cautious about letting him go.’
