Jordan Henderson Targets Premier League Return After Unhappy Stint in Saudi Pro League
Jordan Henderson, the former captain of Liverpool, is reportedly unhappy at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq and is aiming for a return to the Premier League. Henderson made the controversial move to Saudi Arabia in the summer, which received significant criticism and backlash.
Many players have been enticed by the large transfer fees and wages offered in the Middle East. However, Saudi Arabia’s abysmal human rights record has led to accusations of sportswashing. Henderson’s decision to move to a country where homosexuality is illegal and can be punished by death has angered LGBTQ+ groups and their allies, considering his previous vocal support for the gay community.
According to the Daily Mail, Henderson is already unsettled at Al-Ettifaq and is eager to make a comeback in the English top-flight as soon as possible. He will seriously consider any offers from Premier League teams in the January transfer window, just six months after his move to the Middle East.
The 33-year-old is believed to be dissatisfied with the heat and humidity of the playing conditions in Saudi Arabia. Additionally, Al-Ettifaq’s poor attendance figures and the backlash from the LGBTQ+ community have contributed to his unhappiness.
Steven Gerrard and his assistant Ian Foster played crucial roles in convincing Henderson to join Al-Ettifaq. However, Gerrard is currently under immense pressure as the manager due to poor results, while Foster recently resigned to take charge of Plymouth.
Henderson has already informed his Al-Ettifaq teammates that he is considering his future as he awaits interest from English clubs. If he leaves Al-Ettifaq for the Premier League, he will face significant financial losses in terms of taxes and wages.
It remains to be seen whether Henderson’s desire for a Premier League return will materialize in the upcoming transfer window.
