Joe Cole has questioned Mikel Arteta’s half-time approach against Burnley, suggesting a more experienced manager may have demanded more from his Arsenal side.

Pierre-Emerick Aubamayeng’s opener at Turf Moor on Saturday was wiped out just before half-time thanks to a calamitous error involving Granit Xhaka and goalkeeper Bernd Leno, with Chris Wood equalising as a result.

Both sides had their chances in a thrilling second-half – with Arsenal denied what seemed to be a clear penalty by VAR when Erik Pieters appeared to use his arm to block a cross from Nicolas Pepe.

Dani Ceballos also rattled the post in injury time but Cole questioned Arsenal’s hunger in the second period at full-time.

The former Chelsea star, while a fan of Arteta’s tactical set-up, suggested Arsenal may have benefited from a more experienced voice in the dressing room at the break.

‘They go in at half time, Xhaka is walking down with his head down, Leno is walking with his head down because of the mistakes, everybody feels sorry for themselves,’ Cole told BT Sport.

‘How did they come out and respond? They didn’t. I praised him [Arteta] for his honestly after the game and I like the tactical set up for the team.

‘But I think you need an experienced manager to come in the second half and galvanise them and they didn’t come out of the blocks.’

Cole continued: ‘The game was there to be won at half time. The Arsenal players were feeling sorry for themselves.

‘Certainly in the first 20 mins of the first half, There wasn’t that emotional response. They should be coming here winning two or three nil.

‘It’s hard to find out the reasons why because there are so many small details that they are not doing well.’
