Joao Felix to Chelsea all-but done with Portugal forward to extend Atletico Madrid contract as Blues agree £10million loan fee and full coverage of wages

Joao Felix to Chelsea is all-but done after the Blues struck a sensational loan deal with Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal forward will fly to London on Tuesday to undergo a medical and sign a short-term deal until the end of the 2022/23 season.

Before leaving Spain, the 22-year-old is expected to extend his contract with Atletico until 2027.

Chelsea, meanwhile, will pay a £10million fee and cover all of Felix’s £250,000-a-week wages to secure his services until June.

Arsenal and Manchester United both were both thought to be interested in the former Benfica star, but the Blues have won the race.

Felix joined Atletico in a record-breaking £113m deal in 2019 after emerging as one of world football’s brightest talents.

However, the forward’s career has stalled under Diego Simeone and his relationship with the manager is thought to be frosty.

Felix reminded fans of his qualities at the 2022 World Cup, starring for Portugal, but has hardly for Atletico since returning from Qatar, playing 139 minutes out of a possible 360.

Chelsea do not have an option or obligation to make the deal permanent this summer, with Atletico still undecided over Felix’s long-term future.

Reports suggest this could be the last season of Simeone’s 12-year tenure at the Wanda Metropolitano – which could change the situation for Felix.

After making a name for himself in less than one season at Benfica, Felix has 25 league goals in 96 appearances for Atletico and 28 caps for Portugal.
