Jim Ratcliffe Targets Former Chelsea Player as Replacement for Casemiro at Manchester United
New Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe is reportedly eyeing a surprise move for Luton Town midfielder Ross Barkley. Ratcliffe recently completed his partial takeover of the club and has wasted no time in highlighting the need for significant improvement in the squad ahead of the summer transfer window.
The potential departure of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen from Old Trafford has further fueled United’s desire to reduce their wage bill and ease Financial Fair Play restrictions. This, in turn, affected their ability to sign a striker in the January transfer window, according to Erik ten Hag.
Casemiro, who currently earns £350,000 per week, has already attracted interest from the Saudi Pro League. As a result, Ratcliffe has reportedly identified Ross Barkley as a potential signing to strengthen United’s midfield.
Interestingly, both Ratcliffe and INEOS director of sport Sir Dave Brailsford are known to be huge admirers of Barkley from their time together at Ligue 1 side Nice.
Barkley spent last season at Nice before joining Luton Town on a free transfer in August 2020. Since returning to the Premier League, the 30-year-old midfielder has been one of the standout performers in his position. His contributions will be crucial to Luton’s bid to avoid relegation this season.
Former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who played alongside Barkley at Stamford Bridge, recently praised the midfielder for his impact at Luton. Fabregas highlighted Barkley’s return to form after a period of lost confidence and described him as a physically dominant player with an impressive personality on the pitch.
Fabregas also emphasized Barkley’s ability to hold possession and create opportunities for his teammates, particularly against strong teams like Manchester United and Manchester City.
With Barkley’s reputation on the rise and his strong performances for Luton, it is no wonder that Ratcliffe and Brailsford see him as a potential asset for Manchester United.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Ross Barkley will make the move to Old Trafford. However, if the deal goes through, it could prove to be a significant addition to United’s midfield options and a statement of intent from Ratcliffe as he looks to transform the club.
