Jamie Carragher and Daniel Sturridge provided some light-hearted entertainment during their appearance as pundits on Sky Sports’ coverage of Chelsea vs Liverpool. Fans noticed Sturridge’s Prada gloves, worth £900 each, which featured tiny pockets. Carragher couldn’t resist poking fun at the gloves, asking Sturridge what was in the pocket. Sturridge replied that it was “absolutely nothing” before showing off the empty pocket to the camera. Karen Carney joined in the fun, asking what was meant to be in the pocket, to which Sturridge replied “chewing gum, you can maybe squeeze one house key in there.” The exchange prompted hysterical laughter from Carragher, Sturridge and Carney.
Sturridge played with Carragher during the final six months of the centre-back’s Anfield career in 2013. He most recently played for Perth Glory in Australia, making just six appearances before leaving last year. Examining his old Liverpool side’s current woes, Sturridge pointed to “mental fatigue” – as well as the loss of Sadio Mane – as contributing factors. He said that the team had been pushing themselves to the absolute limit for a very long time, putting together a lot of great results and winning a lot of trophies. However, they were now in a bit of a blip, having lost a lot of confidence, with mental fatigue also playing a part. Sturridge also noted that the team had lost one of their best players in Sadio Mane at the start of the season, causing them to play differently and lose some of their identity.
Fans on social media praised Sturridge’s appearance as a pundit, with one writing that he had been “tops”, while another hailed “some brilliant TV from Sky once again”. Another fan declared their love for Sturridge, while others praised his “drip” – a term used to describe someone’s fashion sense.
Overall, the exchange between Carragher and Sturridge provided some much-needed light relief during a match that ended in a 0-0 draw. While Liverpool may be struggling on the pitch at the moment, Sturridge’s appearance as a pundit showed that he still has plenty to offer the world of football off the pitch.
