Jamie Carragher has hailed the signing of Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton to Liverpool for a bargain £35million. The World Cup winner was one of the Seagulls’ best players in 2022/23 and was linked with various different clubs. Carragher expressed his delight at the signing, but also raised his concern that some former Brighton stars have failed to replicate their form at other teams. He questioned whether this was due to being part of a special system at Brighton.
Carragher’s concern is well-founded, as several notable ex-Brighton stars have failed to live up to expectations after leaving the Amex for big money. Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma and Neal Maupay all left last summer – for Chelsea, Tottenham and Everton respectively – and all could be considered the worst signing of the season. However, there have been some successes, such as Arsenal duo Ben White and Leandro Trossard as well as Newcastle defender Dan Burn.
Mac Allister may not be the only Brighton star on the move this summer, with Moises Caicedo still garnering much interest from the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea. Liverpool will be hoping Mac Allister doesn’t flop like former Brighton teammate Marc Cucurella has at Chelsea.
