There was an awkward moment for Jamie Carragher ahead of Liverpool’s win over Aston Villa when he was denied access to seeing Steven Gerrard.
Former Red Carragher was part of the commentary team for Sky Sports and took viewers behind the scenes at Villa Park pre-match.
He was hoping to pay former Liverpool teammate Gerrard, who’s now Aston Villa boss, a pre-match visit but encountered a problem.
A club employee, who has the power to decide who gets access down the tunnel, appeared to not recognise who Carragher was.
Carragher explained he worked for Sky Sports and that he was ‘Steven Gerrard’s mate’.
He added: “He [Gerrard] said it was alright, is that not OK, or?”
But the worker stood firm and asked about Carragher’s accreditation in a polite and friendly exchange.
Carragher was told he had a purple on his accreditation, which granted him pitchside access – but crucially not entry into the tunnel area.

The former defender then wondered if he would be allowed to stay in the vicinity if he phoned Gerrard for him to give the go-ahead.
The worker responded: “If he says it’s okay that will be fine.”
To his credit, Carragher took the whole episode in good spirits – the Villa representative was only doing her job – but didn’t get his reunion with Gerrard.
On Twitter, he even joked about posting a series of crying emojis about it.
Any feelings of embarrassment, though, will have been washed away after the match as Liverpool came from behind to claim a 2-1 win against the Villans.
Gerrard’s men took the lead early on through Douglas Luiz’s goal but Joel Matip hit back almost instantly for the away side.
Sadio Mane then headed in what proved to be the winning goal after the break as Liverpool moved level on points with Premier League leaders Manchester City, who face Wolves in their game in hand on Wednesday night.
Speaking about Mane, who has been linked with Bayern Munich, Carragher said: “When I have watched Liverpool as a fan, Sadio Mane is my favourite player.
“There is just something about Mane. He’s sacrificed himself at times and the shift he puts in.
“I’m a huge fan of Sadio Mane and I can assure you he will be going nowhere because I will not let him go to Bayern Munich, he’d have me to deal with!”
