Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has suggested two potential replacements for Mohamed Salah when he leaves for the Africa Cup of Nations. Carragher believes that Harvey Elliot and Dominik Szoboszlai could step in to fill Salah’s shoes during his absence. Elliot, who is primarily a midfield player, has been tipped to thrive in the role, while Szoboszlai, who has experience playing in a similar position for his former club, could also be a viable option. However, Carragher acknowledges that it will be difficult to replace Salah’s goal-scoring ability.
Salah showcased his superb form in Liverpool’s recent 4-2 victory over Newcastle United, scoring twice and providing an assist. This win propelled Liverpool three points clear at the top of the Premier League. It was Salah’s final game for Liverpool before joining the Egypt squad for the AFCON tournament. Should Egypt reach the final, Salah could potentially miss up to eight games, leaving Jurgen Klopp with a significant dilemma in attack.
Egypt’s AFCON campaign will commence on January 14 against Mozambique, followed by matches against Ghana on January 18 and Cape Verde on January 22. Egypt is expected to progress from Group B, and their round-of-16 fixture will be played on either January 28 or 29, depending on their group stage performance. The AFCON quarter-finals are scheduled for February 2 and 3, with the semi-finals taking place on February 7. The final will be held at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe on February 11.
