Former Manchester United star Jamie Carragher has strongly criticized Marcus Rashford, drawing comparisons between him and struggling teammate Anthony Martial.

Rashford’s Struggles in the 2023/24 Season

After an impressive first season under Erik ten Hag, Rashford is currently enduring a terrible campaign in the 2023/24 season. He has only managed to score two goals in 18 games so far.

The England forward’s performance hit a new low during the 1-0 defeat against Newcastle, leading to him being substituted after just 61 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, Rashford has faced significant criticism for his recent performances. Former United star Steve Bruce even described his display at St. James Park as “petulant.”

Carragher’s Scathing Comments

Liverpool legend Carragher did not hold back in his criticism of Rashford. Speaking on Sky Sports, he said, “Watching Marcus Rashford last night, that was an unacceptable performance for a few reasons.”

Carragher also highlighted the importance of local players like Rashford in lifting the team’s performance. He compared Rashford to Martial, stating, “Marcus Rashford is now looking like Anthony Martial, and as a local player, it’s your job to drag those other players up.”

Carragher’s comparison to Martial holds weight, as the French forward has struggled to make an impact at Manchester United. Over the past four seasons, Martial has only scored 19 goals across all competitions.

Carragher emphasized the importance of leadership from players like Rashford, citing Son Heung-min’s performance in Manchester City’s draw with Tottenham as an example. He urged Rashford to be a leader and set an example for his teammates.

Conclusion

Marcus Rashford’s recent performances have drawn strong criticism from Jamie Carragher, who compared him to Anthony Martial. Carragher highlighted the need for Rashford to step up as a leader and improve the team’s performance. Only time will tell if Rashford can bounce back from his current struggles.
