James Maddison misses final chance to impress Gareth Southgate as Leicester star picks up last-minute suspension for diving with England boss watching before World Cup squad announcement

James Maddison has picked up a one-game suspension for diving, missing his last chance to impress England boss Gareth Southgate, who was watching on.

Maddison will now be suspended for Leicester’s next game against Leeds in the Premier League, following on from his fifth booking of the season in a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace.

That means his return fixture will be against Wolves on October 23, two days after England players are expected to find out who is going to Qatar.

Three Lions manager Southgate was in the stands at the King Power to observe the clash, with Maddison desperate to impress as he attempts to land a spot in England’s 2022 World Cup squad.

However, his biggest moment of the game came deep into stoppage time when he failed to get to a loose ball in the Palace penalty area, and went down despite a lack of contact.

Referee Andy Madley took no time at all to reach for his pocket, and replays were conclusive over the act of simulation.

It capped off a frustrating day for the 25-year-old who managed four shots in a stagnant game, only testing Vicente Guaita with one of them.

Conversely, his opposing no.10, Ebere Eze, may have staked his claim for a wildcard appearance in Southgate’s squad with his three dribbles rare pieces of quality in the game.

Maddison, though, has an extensive back catalogue to impress Southgate with his combined 27 goals and assists since the start of last season only bettered by Harry Kane’s 34 in the same period.

In fact, this season alone the Coventry born midfielder boasts five goals and two assists in nine games despite Leicester’s struggles.

Now though, Maddison won’t play again before Southgate names his side, which could prove costly.
