Ivan Toney’s Penalty Woes in Newcastle Match: Makes Amends in 2-1 Defeat

Date:

Ivan Toney, the striker for Brentford, missed his first penalty since 2018 during a match against his former team, Newcastle. However, he made up for it just before halftime by scoring a second spot-kick, which gave the Bees the lead in a 2-1 defeat at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Toney, who is an England international, thought he had scored the opening goal in the eighth minute, but VAR denied him due to being offside. He was then given the perfect opportunity to score his first goal against Newcastle since being sold to Peterborough five years ago. Unfortunately, his weak attempt was saved by his Three Lions teammate Nick Pope, who guessed correctly to his left-hand side.

Prior to missing this penalty, Toney had scored 24 successive spot-kicks, excluding shootouts, with ten of those coming in the Premier League. However, he didn’t have to wait too long to make up for his missed effort as Brentford was awarded another penalty on the stroke of halftime. VAR intervened again after picking out an Alexander Isak foul on Rico Lewis.

Toney stepped up again and went the same way as before, but this time his strike proved too hot to handle for Pope. The ball nestled into the bottom corner, and Toney wheeled away in delight with Brentford deserving of their one-goal advantage.

Toney has now scored 18 Premier League goals this season, with only Erling Haaland and Harry Kane scoring more. Despite Toney’s efforts, Brentford failed to build on their momentum after the break, and Newcastle scored two quick goals through a David Raya own goal and an Alexander Isak stunner. Eddie Howe’s side held on to remain third in the table.

In conclusion, Ivan Toney missed his first penalty since 2018 against Newcastle but made up for it just before halftime by scoring a second spot-kick. Toney has scored 18 Premier League goals this season, and Brentford failed to build on their momentum after the break, losing to Newcastle 2-1.
