‘It gets worse’ – Simon Jordan reacts to damning transfer update as Chelsea lead Manchester United in race for Frenkie de Jong despite making lower offer for Barcelona star

Chelsea are the more likely destination for Frenkie de Jong this summer, despite the fact their offer is lower than Manchester United’s.

That’s according to talkSPORT’s football correspondent Alex Crook who has been discussing ‘the transfer saga of the summer’, which the Red Devils could be on the losing side of.

The Barcelona star has been at the centre of speculation this summer with Erik ten Hag determined to bring the Dutch midfielder to Old Trafford as part of his new-look side.

However a dispute over unpaid wages at the Nou Camp has complicated a deal, with £17million worth of unpaid money owed to him proving a source of contention between the player and club.

Meanwhile, Barca president Joan Laporta has reportedly claimed there was criminality involved from the club’s former bosses in the contract extension De Jong signed back in 2020, and want the player to revert to the initial contract he signed when he arrived from Ajax.

As a result, United have struggled to make headway in their pursuit of the central midfielder, paving the way for Chelsea to swoop in with an offer of their own.

The Blues are now deemed to be favourites to land De Jong, despite Crook revealing that the London club is actually offering less than United.

Speaking on White and Jordan, Crook said: “It’s the saga of the summer. I got a message last night say that Man United are expecting developments in terms of De Jong’s future, one way or another, in the next 24 hours.

“We could hear news from Barcelona today. On their part, Barcelona are pushing for De Jong to either accept their 50 per cent pay cut or leave the club.

“Chelsea, on their part, are confident that they will agree a fee of £70million, so if he does leave then it will become a straight choice between Chelsea and Manchester United.

“Because Manchester United have sat on their hands on this one, Chelsea appear to be the more likely destination.

“I think that will be really embarrassing for Richard Arnold and John Murtough regarding a player that Erik ten Hag has made it clear that he wants to build his new Red Devils’ revolution around, and he ends up joining a Premier League rival.”

Asked by Simon Jordan if Chelsea are doing anything different to Man United in negotiations, Crook said: “I don’t believe so.

“In fact, it’s been suggested to me that the transfer fee might actually be less than what Manchester United are offering.”

Responding to this, Jordan said: “Oh dear, it gets worse!”
