Lionel Messi, the Argentine footballer who scored 672 goals in 778 appearances for Barcelona before joining Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) for free in 2021, has been linked with a return to Barcelona this summer. Messi and PSG have the option to extend their partnership into a third season, but both parties are said to be reluctant to exercise the clause in his contract. The 35-year-old has endured a loveless two seasons in the French capital, having been suspended by the club for an unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia at the start of May before being booed by his own supporters upon his return to the fold. Barcelona manager Xavi has confirmed he has asked the club to sign Messi and that he has discussed the possible return directly with the player himself. However, despite Xavi’s desire to see his close friend return, it remains to be seen whether or not the club will even be able to afford the reunion. Barca have to slash their wage bill by around £175m for next season to comply with La Liga regulations. Such is their financial predicament, the club have even been unable to register new contracts for existing players at various points this season. Messi would likely have to take a pay cut from the £34.1 million salary he currently enjoys at PSG. Barca president Joan Laporta has vowed to “do everything we can to bring Leo Messi back to Barcelona”.
