Women’s World Cup Debutants Republic of Ireland Eliminated After Loss to Canada
The Republic of Ireland’s journey in the Women’s World Cup has come to an end after a 2-1 defeat to Canada in the group stage. This loss leaves Ireland with zero points, having suffered two consecutive losses in their opening fixtures.
Ireland started the match strong, taking an early lead in the first half through Katie McCabe’s spectacular goal from a corner. This goal marked Ireland’s first-ever goal in the Women’s World Cup. However, Canada managed to equalize just before halftime when Megan Connolly unintentionally turned Julia Grosso’s cross into her own net.
The turning point came in the second half when Adriana Leon prodded home Quinn’s delivery, giving Canada the lead. Despite Ireland’s efforts, including a solo run from McCabe that was blocked, they failed to find an equalizer. The loss, combined with their previous defeat to Australia, means that Ireland cannot catch the co-hosts and secure a spot in the next round.
It is a bittersweet moment for Captain McCabe, who expressed her disappointment for the team. She acknowledged that while it was nice to score and have a good start, ultimately, it is the results that matter at this level and in tournaments like the Women’s World Cup. McCabe also highlighted the team’s belief in their ability to push for another goal in the second half.
Vera Pauw’s side made history by qualifying for the Women’s World Cup for the first time in October through a play-off victory over Scotland. Despite their elimination, McCabe expressed her pride in leading the team and praised the young players who stepped up during the tournament. She emphasized that this experience will only fuel their hunger for more success in the future.
Ireland’s World Cup campaign will conclude with a match against Nigeria on Monday. Meanwhile, Canada has secured four points from their opening two games and has the opportunity to top Group B with a victory over Australia.
In addition to Ireland, Costa Rica and Zambia also suffered group stage exits earlier in the day, becoming the first three teams to be eliminated from the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
