Iowa Adds Versatile Athlete Jaylen Watson to 2024 Class

Iowa’s football program has secured its 19th commitment in the 2024 class with the addition of three-star athlete Jaylen Watson. The versatile player, primarily a wide receiver during his first two varsity high school seasons, will transition to playing as a defensive back for the Hawkeyes. Watson’s decision to choose Iowa over other schools such as Minnesota, Cincinnati, West Virginia, and Maryland comes after several unofficial trips and his official visit to Iowa last month.

Standing at 5 feet 11 inches and weighing 175 pounds, Watson played for Detroit’s River Rogue High School last year but has transferred to Toledo Central Catholic High School in Ohio for the upcoming season. However, Watson’s ties to Iowa go beyond his football career. Having grown up in Belleville, Michigan, he played little league football under the guidance of Thomas Deasfernandes, who happens to be the father of current Iowa junior cornerback Brendan Deasfernandes. During his official visit, Watson was hosted by Brendan, further solidifying his connection to the Hawkeyes. Additionally, Watson is the nephew of former Iowa running back Fred Russell, who had an impressive college career rushing for 2,760 yards and 17 touchdowns from 2001-2003.

Watson’s commitment is another positive addition to Iowa’s recruiting efforts. The Hawkeyes have been successful in securing commitments from seven out of the nine uncommitted players who visited during their official visit weekend. As for Watson’s specific role within the team, it is still too early to determine whether he will play as a cornerback or safety. However, his athleticism and strong change-of-direction ability make him a valuable asset to the team’s defense.

With Watson’s commitment, Iowa now boasts three defensive backs in their 2024 class. The only remaining official visitors yet to make their decisions are defensive lineman Chima Chineke from Plano, Texas, and safety Xavier Lucas from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Chineke is set to choose between Iowa and Texas Tech on July 17th, while Lucas has taken official visits to Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa and is still considering his options.

Overall, Watson’s addition to the Hawkeyes’ 2024 class is a significant step forward for the program. His versatility and family ties to Iowa make him a valuable asset both on and off the field. As the team continues to build its roster, Watson’s commitment adds depth to the defensive backfield and strengthens the Hawkeyes’ overall recruiting efforts.

In conclusion, Jaylen Watson’s commitment to the University of Iowa’s football program marks an important milestone for the team. His transition from wide receiver to defensive back showcases his versatility and adaptability as a player. With strong ties to the program through his little league football coach and his uncle, a former Iowa running back, Watson’s commitment further solidifies his connection to the Hawkeyes. As Iowa continues to build its 2024 class, Watson’s addition brings depth and talent to the team’s defense.
