Inter Miami is already experiencing the Lionel Messi effect, with their Instagram followers skyrocketing by over 400 percent in less than a day. The global superstar shocked fans by announcing his free transfer to David Beckham’s MLS franchise, instead of rejoining Barcelona as expected. Messi’s move to America comes six months after leading Argentina to World Cup glory, and he is undoubtedly one of the biggest and most popular sports stars on the planet, with an astonishing net worth of almost £500million, over £50m of which comes from lucrative sponsorship deals. Inter Miami’s Instagram account had 900,000 followers before Messi’s announcement, but less than 24 hours later, that figure had jumped to a whopping 4.7m, an increase of around 411 percent. Meanwhile, PSG has lost one million followers since Messi’s exit last weekend. Messi’s influence is sure to continue growing at Miami once he plays his first match for the team. Reflecting on his decision to join the Americans, Messi said that he wants to step out of the spotlight and focus more on his family and rediscover joy.
