Gerardo Martino Appointed Inter Miami Manager
Inter Miami have appointed Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino as their new manager, replacing Phil Neville in the role. The 60-year-old brings a wealth of experience to the club, having managed teams such as Barcelona, Argentina, Newell’s Old Boys, Mexico, Paraguay and Atlanta United.
David Beckham, Inter Miami co-owner, said: ‘Tata is a highly respected figure in our sport whose track record speaks for itself. We are confident that his achievements in the game and experience as a head coach will inspire our team and excite our fans and look forward to seeing the impact he will have on and off the field.’
Jorge Mas, Inter Miami managing owner, added: ‘We are very happy to be able to welcome Tata to Inter Miami. We feel he is a coach who matches our ambitions as a club and we’re optimistic about what we can accomplish together. Tata has coached at the highest levels and we believe that experience will be hugely beneficial to us as we aim to compete for titles here.’
Martino’s Career History
Gerardo Martino has been involved in football management since 1998, when he took charge of his hometown team, Newell’s Old Boys. He then went on to manage Paraguay from 2006-11, leading them to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup.
In 2013, Martino was appointed manager of Barcelona, where he worked with Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets. He then moved on to manage Argentina from 2014-16 before taking charge of MLS side Atlanta United in 2017. During his time at Atlanta United, Martino won the MLS Cup in 2018 before leaving the club in 2019.
Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets Reunite with Martino
Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets will reunite with Gerardo Martino at Inter Miami after previously working together at Barcelona during Martino’s stint in charge at the Camp Nou from 2013-14. The two players are yet to be officially unveiled as Inter Miami players, which is expected to happen on 16 July.
There could still be another Barcelona legend involved as well, with the MLS side linked with a move for Jordi Alba who is available on a free transfer after leaving the Catalan club this summer.
