Darts star Michael van Gerwen has hilariously stuck the boot in on Manchester United after a bookmaker joked he was one of Erik ten Hag’s summer transfer targets.
The Red Devils struggled in the 2021/22 season, finishing seventh with the club’s lowest Premier League points haul and desperate for a return to the glory days.
Big things were expected this summer but they are currently lagging behind their Premier League rivals in the transfer market.
This comes despite them bringing in new manager Erik ten Hag, meaning Man United are sitting ducks for jokers.
And Paddy Power took full advantage, posting: “BREAKING: Man Utd’s list of summer transfer targets has been leaked.
“The leaks confirm the club are interested in signing Frenkie De Jong, Antony, Jurrien Timber, Lisandro Martinez, Jari Litmanen, Wesley Sneijder, Michael van Gerwen and Tiesto.”
While some of the names of the list appeared reasonable targets, followers started to see the joke when the names of retired players Litmanen and Sneijder appeared followed by famous Dutchmen Van Gerwen and music DJ Tiesto.
And the reigning Premier League Darts champion took to Twitter to hilariously distance himself from the ‘transfer’, insisting he is too good for the club who will have to make do with Europa League football this season.
He replied: “I’m a Champions League player I’m not dropping down”.
Manchester United have had a slow start to their proposed summer squad rebuild ahead of Ten Hag’s first season at the helm.
United have been linked with a host of names including a raid on Ten Hag’s former club Ajax for defenders Jurrien Timber and Lisandro Martinez, and Brazilian winger Antony.
They have also been locked in discussions with Barcelona for midfielder Frenkie de Jong with the clubs still unable to agree a fee for the 25-year-old Dutchman.
United missed out on Champions League football last season and Ten Hag knows he has a huge job on his hands to get the club back into the top four next season with Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea all expected to strengthen.
The club’s did participate in the Champions League last season but were beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Atletico Madrid in the Round of 16.
Whether they will make moves in the transfer market soon is unknown but if they do, Van Gerwen won’t be signing.
That’s unless he does a 180…
