‘I’ll take it as a compliment’ – John Stones reveals reason why Man City teammate Bernardo Silva named his dog after him

The bromance between Manchester City stars Bernardo Silva and John Stones has been no secret since the pair began playing together in 2017.

But one unknown factor of the players’ close friendship has now been revealed, with Stones explaining the reason behind just why Silva named his dog after him.

The pair have been teammates for five years, with Silva moving to the Etihad one year after Stones made the switch from Everton.

And the City stars have got that close that the Portuguese playmaker named his dog ‘John’ after him.

    Now, fans know why.

“Bernardo said to me, ‘If I get a dog, John, I’m going to call it John. John Stones’,” the City star explained on Goal’s Box to Box.

He continued: “So I was like, ‘Alright, why?’. He said because every time I get my dog or shout [at] my dog, I’ll think of you and telling you to come to me like I own you.

“Anyway the next minute, he gets a dog, and I said ‘Oh, nice Bernardo, what you got?’

“‘I’ve got a French Bulldog, I’ve called it John like I said I would.’

“I said ‘Oh my god, here we go’, and then it just stemmed from there.

“And then he brings his dog into training and yeah, you can imagine what goes on in the changing room then.”

However, whilst Silva joked with Stones that he named his dog John to wind him up, the defender insists he knows it’s a nice gesture, really.

“We’ve got a good relationship me and Bernardo,” he said.

“So, for him to have a dog, and for his Mrs to accept calling him John as well, he must like me, so I’ll take that as a compliment in some way.”

Speaking in an interview with Manchester City back at the end of 2021, Silva himself explained: “We really wanted to have a dog, and he was named after my friend, John Stones, because we’re very close and I always said to him that one day if I had a dog, I would call him ‘John’.

“It’s actually a great name. We love it and Ines [Silva’s fiancee] agrees with it. I think it suits him; he’s a beautiful boy and is very intelligent.”
