Konate’s Frustration and Preparation Challenges
Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool’s defender, recently disclosed that he faced numerous difficulties in preparing for the Euros this summer, where he has remained an unused substitute in all of France’s games. Konate admitted that he came close to passing out on multiple occasions during his preparations for the tournament. Despite finishing the season behind Jarell Quansah in Liverpool’s pecking order, Konate had hoped to secure a starting position in France’s defense.
Frustration at Being Left on the Bench
However, Konate has been left frustrated as France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, opted for William Saliba and Dayot Upamecano as his preferred center-back pairing in all three of France’s group games. As a result, Liverpool’s No. 5 has been relegated to the bench, watching Les Bleus finish second in Group D. This outcome sets up a last-16 clash with Belgium on Monday, leaving Konate feeling “frustrated.” Speaking to reporters, Konate expressed his disappointment, acknowledging the expectations he had when joining the squad. He said, “I came with a lot of expectations, that’s part of football. I knew what my place was before the first match. It’s frustrating but I know my role on and off the field. A 100 percent ‘Ibou’ would never have sat on the bench.”
Short Preparation and Lessons Learned
Konate further revealed that he faced physical challenges due to the limited time for preparation. Having not played for a month and a half, he confessed to almost passing out multiple times during his training. The short preparation period was an obstacle that he had to overcome. Nonetheless, he viewed it as a valuable lesson in his football journey, stating, “The preparation was very short. It’s part of football. It was a good lesson for me.”
Konate’s Nod to Liverpool and Clarification on Selection
Interestingly, Konate’s comment about the short preparation period seemed to hint at his time with Liverpool. Towards the end of last season, he started just one of the Reds’ final six games, with Quansah starting the remaining five. However, Konate clarified that he was not “dropped” by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. He emphasized that if there had been more at stake, he would have discussed his situation with the manager.
Speaking Out Against Prejudice and Stereotypes
In a press conference, Konate took the opportunity to address a pressing social issue in France. He spoke out against the far-right ahead of their election, highlighting the importance of diversity in the country. Konate, who comes from an immigrant family, emphasized the need to put an end to prejudice and stereotypes. He passionately stated, “Diversity is France’s strength. Prejudice and stereotypes have to stop; we all have to be together in all circumstances.”
Konate’s candidness about his challenges and frustrations offers insight into the mental and physical hurdles faced by professional footballers. It also showcases his determination and resilience in dealing with setbacks. Moreover, his willingness to use his platform to advocate for unity and combat discrimination demonstrates his commitment to social issues beyond the football field.
