Ian Wright is not convinced that a striker in the mould of Erling Haaland would improve Arsenal’s current form. The Manchester City star has had an incredible season, scoring 47 goals in 40 appearances – 32 of those coming in the Premier League. Five in his last three league appearances have helped Pep Guardiola’s side keep the heat on league leaders Arsenal, with the gap reduced to four points following the Gunners’ 2-2 draw with West Ham on Sunday.
Arsenal have scored only four less than City in the league this season, with the goals shared out amongst Mikel Arteta’s side. Gabriel Martinelli leads the scoring charts with 14 in all competitions, while Bukayo Saka (13) and Martin Odegaard (11) also hit double figures, and strikers Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nektiah have nine each.
Despite being blown away by Haaland’s form in front of goal, Arsenal legend Wright suggests someone like Norwegian could ‘mess up the equilibrium’ in the Gunners attack. He believes that when goals are spread out amongst different players, it makes it harder for teams to plan for them.
Arsenal can extend their lead to seven points if they beat the league’s bottom side Southampton on Friday night, while City will have two games in hand by the time the two teams meet on Thursday 27 April in what is being widely regarded as a title-deciding clash at the Etihad Stadium.
