Jack Grealish has hit the headlines for living it up in Las Vegas after winning the Premier League title, but that’s mere child’s play compared to what the old pros used to get up to…

…as Rangers legend Ally McCoist revealed on the talkSPORT Breakfast!

Back in the day, decades before Grealish’s American adventure, the drinking culture in British football was huge.

Professionals like Harry Kane and Cristiano Ronaldo, tee-total footballers fully dedicated to their craft, were so rare that you’d be called a square if you didn’t join the rest of the lads for a pint or two – or ten – every week.

From Arsenal’s infamous Tuesday club to Paul Gascoigne’s dentist chair chaos with England, the British game and alcohol seemed to go hand-in-hand.

Fast-forward to now, top players only have to be pictured with drink in hand before it’s splashed all over the back pages and goes viral online

With the rise of social media, the current pros really have no chance of going incognito while they enjoy some downtime after a long and gruelling campaign.

So Ally should count himself quite lucky there was no Twitter, Instagram or TikTok when he partied so hard in Ibiza he ‘made Jack Grealish look like a monk’.

Crikey.

“I remember back in the day I went to San Antonio, Ibiza, and I absolutely ripped the place apart,” McCoist told talkSPORT host Laura Woods.

“I was there for three weeks, right, and you know what I did? This is no joke, I actually went to the airport after two weeks and made up a story that I had to go home.

“I was shaking, my whole body, I was a wreck. I had partied in a way that made Jack Grealish look like a monk.

“I went mental for 14 days.”

We wonder if it looked a bit like this…

“Then went to the airport and pleaded that I needed to get home,” McCoist added.

“I made some story up and they got me on a flight back to Glasgow.

“And I slept the entire way back!”

Ah, the good old days.

While the papers have gone big on Grealish, the £100million man has received plenty of support for his summer of fun.

The likes of Simon Jordan and Adebayo Akinfenwa have defended the star on talkSPORT, and Woods was the latest to tell critics to leave the guy alone.

“It’s up to Jack – he’s an adult and wants to enjoy his time off in the way he wants to do that,” said the Breakfast host.

“Yes, he could maybe be more discreet, but listen Jack Grealish is the No.1 target for the media and photographers because the minute you get a photo of him, whatever the setting is, people are going to want to buy that because people want to see it.

“He’s just signed a deal with Gucci, he is an it-boy, that’s it at the moment. He’s wanted, he’s popular, he’s in demand.

“If you’re going to Vegas, you’re going because you want to relax and have a good time and you can’t always hide away from cameras.

“I don’t think he’s been doing anything dreadful. The way people are speaking about it, it’s like he’s out doing something awful all the time.

“And sometimes I think with certain players, their personality is a part of the way they play and you can’t separate them and, if you try, you can take the creativity out of them on the pitch.”
