Former West Ham defender Jose Fonte has offered an exciting insight into their latest signing Nayef Aguerd, saying he ‘likes everything about him’.

The Moroccon centre back has arrived from Rennes in a deal that could reach £30million marking a signal of intent from Davis Moyes after a season to remember.

West Ham went all the way to the Europa League semi-finals but lost to Eintracht Frankfurt – the eventual winners – but faced disruption during the run-in with injuries to their back four.

Angelo Ogbonna missed the majority of the season with an ACL injury in November, while Kurt Zouma and Issa Diop also missed game time.

Aguerd is far from a depth signing though, with Lille captain Fonte joining talkSPORT to rave about the 26-year-old.

“Very, very good centre back, I like him a lot,” Fonte enthused.

“I’ve always appreciated his game, very good left foot, very good at giving balls between the lines, starting the play out from the back, he’s quick, he’s good in the air, he’s aggressive.

“I like everything about him, I’ve always had my eye on him so they should be very excited about him, very, very good player.”

Fonte, who was a regular for Southampton either side of stints with Crystal Palace and West Ham, is feeling positive about the Hammers after a year in which they set a high bar.

The club have been strongly linked to Saints’ striker Armando Broja who is on loan from Chelsea, as well as exciting Hull City youngster Keane Lewis-Potter.

When asked if West Ham can improve on last season, Fonte said: “I hope so, it’s only the natural progression.

“They’ve been signing very very good players, they’ve been building up, and if they can keep Declan [Rice] and the players they have they’ll keep progressing and it’s only natural to improve on what they did last year.

“It’s never easy, but it’s possible and if they keep on adding players like Aguerd they will certainly be closer to it.”
