Liverpool Benefit from VAR Decision in Crystal Palace Match
Liverpool experienced another controversial VAR decision during their recent match against Crystal Palace. However, fans were left confused and frustrated by the lengthy review process.
VAR Review Delays Match Restart
The incident occurred when Virgil van Dijk was accused of fouling Odsonne Edouard in the penalty box. Referee Andy Madley awarded a penalty and showed Van Dijk a yellow card. However, VAR intervened to review an incident that happened just before the foul.
After a lengthy review, it was determined that Will Hughes had fouled Wataru Endo before passing the ball to Edouard. Referee Madley was sent to the VAR screen, and the match did not resume until four minutes later.
Controversy Surrounding VAR Decision
The VAR review process was heavily criticized for its duration. The incident was replayed 31 times for viewers, and Madley was shown 24 replays before making a final decision. Although most agree that Hughes committed a foul, the lengthy process has raised concerns.
Scott Minto, a commentator for talkSPORT, admitted that it was the right decision but expressed dissatisfaction with VAR’s involvement. He argued that VAR should not try to persuade the referee to overturn a decision made in real time.
Frustration Among Fans
Many fans took to social media to express their frustration with the time-consuming review process. The general consensus was that it was indeed a foul. Even Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher voiced his opinion, stating, “Why is it taking so long? It’s a foul!”
