How will the World Cup affect the 2022/23 Premier League season: Full details on start and end date, six-week break and Boxing Day resumption as England’s top-flight prepares for winter tournament in Qatar

The 2022/23 Premier League season is up and running as elite football continues to ramp up ahead of this winter’s World Cup in Qatar.

The COVID-19 lockdown saw the 2020/21 campaign condensed down to fit in all the matches after the season got underway a month late.

It saw more midweek games than ever before as the top-flight was fast-tracked to accommodate for the rearranged European Championships over the summer.

Players had little time to rest ahead of last season and with the Qatar World Cup coming up in the winter of 2022, there’s still plenty of football coming up.

Will the World Cup affect the 2022/23 Premier League season?

The 2021/22 domestic season got under way on August 13 and ran until May 22.

It was the second to have a February winter break despite no major football taking place this summer.

The Qatar World Cup is then being staged at the end of the year meaning it will cause major disruptions to the new Premier League campaign.

This included a start date of August 6, 2022 and a last day of May 28, 2023.

The Premier League will break during this term after the weekend of November 12/13 before resuming fixtures again on Boxing Day.

Players will have a week of preparations with their national teams before heading out to the tournament in the Middle East.

They will then have only eight days to recover in time for the league’s resumption should they reach the World Cup final on December 18.

Executives of all 20 Premier League clubs were in London last summer for a scheduled meeting, and the programme for 2022/23 was decided.

There is set to be only six weekends without Premier League games.
