Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney shocked the football world when they completed the takeover of Welsh club Wrexham AFC.

The Hollywood pair realised their dream when their bid to buy the National League side was successful back in 2020.

Disney+ cameras have been following the pair in their quest to take Wrexham global and the actors are set to feature in a new documentary, Welcome To Wrexham, which includes behind the scenes footage and access.

How much did Wrexham AFC sell for?

While their bid to take over was successful back in 2020, it wasn’t until February 2021 that Reynolds and McElhenney gained control of struggling Wrexham.

The deal came about when the friends decided they wanted to buy a British football club.

British actor, football fan and friend of McElhenney, Humphrey Ker, was dispatched back to the UK by Reynolds and McElhenney to establish a criteria which would help the pair decide which football team to purchase.

Wrexham came out on top with a score of 38 out of 50, which was based on facilities, fanbase, history and finance.

Interestingly, the Hollywood actors also included narrative in the criteria, with Wrexham having fell into hard times after becoming the first team to be docked 10 points in Football League history in 2004.

After almost 20 years of scandal, which included the club almost being kicked out of the league in 2011, the club was taken over by the Wrexham Supporters Trust when they generated enough funds later that year.

The duo bought the club from the Supporters Trust for £2million as part of the deal after winning 98.6% of the vote cast amongst members.

To thank him for his efforts in selecting Wrexham as their club, Reynolds and McElhenney made Ker Executive Director of the club.

Since completing the deal, the Hollywood double-act have been spotted at several Wrexham games, including at Wembley in May, alongside Reynolds’ wife Blake Lively and David Beckham for the FA Trophy final against Bromley, which the team lost.

Wrexham suffered further heartbreak when they narrowly missed out on promotion to the Football League after losing dramatically to Grimsby in the play-off semi final.

When is Welcome To Wrexham released on Disney Plus?

The much-anticipated Welcome To Wrexham documentary arrives in the UK on Disney Plus on August 25.

It is thought the documentary will show Reynolds and McElhenney taking a very hands-on approach in the day-to-day running of the club.

Welcome To Wrexham will also track the lives of supporters living in the Welsh town as they come to terms with two Hollywood superstars buying their local football team.

A trailer released for the new documentary suggests the show will feature two series.

What has Reynolds said about Welcome To Wrexham?

Speaking to ITV’s Lorraine about his time at the club and the new series, Reynolds said: ‘Wrexham had its own unique brand of glamour and excitement before I got there. Both me and Rob McElhenney, we love it. It’s such a passion project.

‘Football in general has really been both the best and the worst thing that’s ever happened to me. I get it now, I understand the beautiful game as much as I can understand it at this stage in life and it’s a unique brand of gorgeous torture that I’ve never experienced before.’

He added: ‘I love it with all of my heart and it also breaks my heart on a pretty regular basis.’

Recalling what he told his wife Blake Lively when he bought the club, Reynolds told Jimmy Kimmel Live this week: ‘I remember saying, “I have bad news and I have really bad news, I slipped into someone’s DMs again.

‘”The really bad news is that I might have bought half of a fifth-tier national football league in Wales”.’

And it’s fair to say, Blake wasn’t best pleased.

When asked what her reaction was, Ryan replied: ‘Not good, Rob. Not great. We’re still working through that one.’
