    The 2022 World Cup is officially underway after host nation Qatar – taking part in the competition for the very first time – were beaten by Ecuador at the Al Bayt Stadium.

    This fixture had originally been scheduled for the third game on Monday but was brought forward to Sunday so the opening ceremony could take place immediately before kick off.
