James Madison University Targets Bob Chesney as New Head Coach
After the departure of Curt Cignetti to Indiana, James Madison University (JMU) is now focused on hiring Bob Chesney, the current head coach of Holy Cross, to fill the vacant position, according to sources within the program and industry.

If hired, Chesney will be responsible for maintaining JMU’s rapid momentum. The Dukes had an impressive 11-1 season and have achieved a record of 19-4 since transitioning to the FBS in 2022. They are set to face Air Force in the Armed Forces Bowl on December 23.

Chesney, 46 years old, has been coaching Holy Cross since 2018, leading the team to 44 wins and four playoff appearances. Prior to his tenure with the Crusaders, he coached Assumption College (Mass.), where he guided the Greyhounds to the Division II playoffs three times, and Salve Regina (R.I.).

Cignetti, 62 years old, had an impressive five-year tenure at JMU, achieving a record of 52-9. He left for Indiana on November 30 after the university fired Tom Allen, who had a record of 33-49 in his eight years as head coach. Allen’s departure included a financial settlement of two payments of $7.75 million.
