Former Bucks Owner Herb Kohl Dies at 88
Herb Kohl, the former U.S. senator and owner of the Milwaukee Bucks, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88 after a brief illness, according to his nonprofit organization. Kohl was known for his commitment to people and his philanthropic efforts.
A Legacy of Humility and Kindness
Joanne Anton, director of giving for Herb Kohl Philanthropies, praised Kohl’s legacy in a statement, saying, “Herb Kohl Way perfectly sums up a legacy of humility, commitment, compromise, and kindness to countless people he worked with, served and helped along the way.”
Kohl served as a United States senator from Wisconsin from 1989 to 2013. He purchased the Milwaukee Bucks in 1985 for $18 million, ensuring that the team remained in Milwaukee. Despite playing in one of the NBA’s smallest media markets and the smallest venue in the league, Kohl’s wealth allowed the Bucks to thrive.
A New Arena and Continued Support
Three years after Kohl’s purchase, the Bucks moved into the Bradley Center, a new $90 million arena. Kohl continued to support the team even after selling it in 2014 to New York businessmen Marc Lasry and Wes Edens for $550 million. As part of the sale, Kohl pledged $100 million to help build a new arena and secure the team’s future in Milwaukee.
In 2018, the Fiserv Forum opened, thanks to Kohl’s generosity. The Bucks went on to win their first NBA championship in 2021, with Kohl proudly participating in the championship parade.
A Fond Farewell
The NBA and Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed their condolences. Silver called Kohl “a dear friend and one of our very best public servants.” He acknowledged Kohl’s commitment to the Bucks and the city of Milwaukee, stating, “his vision and unparalleled financial contribution towards a new arena in Milwaukee will forever be remembered.”
Kohl’s Legacy for the Bucks
Without Herb Kohl, the Bucks may not have remained in Milwaukee. Kohl played a crucial role in ensuring the team stayed in the city by purchasing it in 1985 and later including language in the sale agreement to guarantee its continued presence. His dedication to the franchise and the city will always be remembered.
